Trick or Treat? . . . I choose Treat!


Second week of October . . . and the countdown to Halloween has begun!  Costumes to be made, decorating to be done and CANDY. . . tons of it.  Oh no, the dilemma begins and I hear you saying . . . Should I let my kids join in the fun and consume tons of candy that I know has absolutely no nutritional value?  But it’s once a year.  But I would never buy that junk.  How much candy should they be able to eat?  One piece on the first night?  No, maybe they can pick out their favorite two pieces.  And how about over the following days? Wait . . . I want a snickers bar too.  No, that is setting a bad example.  No, maybe not.  I so remember loving this holiday!  No shame.  Do I throw it all away?  Now, that’s mean.  Do I hide it in the cupboard?  Then I might be sneaking some while they are at school.  Do I donate it?  Why?  So it’s bad for my kids but not for someone else’s.  Stop!  Stop!  I hear the dialogue going on in your head.  This job of parenting can be so daunting!

My advice is there is no right way nor wrong way . . . just your way.  So, decide what way that is and stick to it.  That being said . . . I like to make some homemade candy treats with my kids for Halloween.  And this year . . . drum roll, please!   The winner is . . .  White Chocolate Hazelnut Pumpkin Pie Spice Butter Cups!  Oh my yumminess . . . and what a mouthful they are!

White Chocolate Hazelnut Pumpkin Pie Spice Butter Cups!
1/2 cup hazelnut butter
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
3 Tablespoons powdered sugar
4 bars of white chocolate, each 100 grams
Fleur de Sel *for sprinkling on top
Place the hazelnut butter, pumpkin pie spice and powdered sugar in a bowl and stir to combine.
Place the white chocolate in a glass bowl and sit it atop a pot of simmering water.  Stir until the chocolate completely melts.
Place mini muffin liners on a baking tray and begin filling a first layer of chocolate.  Then place the tray in the freezer for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, begin rolling mini hazelnut butter balls to place on top of hardened chocolate.  Once chocolate has hardened, place hazelnut butter ball in center and flatten slightly.  Now. add a last layer of chocolate to fill the mini muffin liners.  Sprinkle with Fleur de Sel.
