‘Tis the season for . . . Grapefruits!

My fruit bowl is full with grapefruits . . . overloaded!  And I couldn’t be happier.  I just love a morning grapefruit.  Slice it right in half, cut each little section, scoop it up with a tiny spoon and eat grapefruit goodness!  Tart and tangy with a bit of underlying sweetness . . . yes, grapefruit goodness!  Grapefruits are glorious in all their juiciness and sparkle with citrus health promoting benefits. Now, that’s a good way to start your morning!

Grapefruits are part of the citrus family of fruits along with the orange, lemon and pomelo.  They are categorized by the color of their flesh being either white, pink or ruby.  Grapefruits range in size from four to six inches in diameter.  Some varieties have seeds while others are seedless.  The Latin name for grapefruits is Citrus paradisi . . . just maybe meaning a little bit of paradise is weaved right on through this fruit.  Well, it might be what I think and I’ll take a bite of morning paradise any day!  And you?

And if you aren’t convinced that grapefruits are a superb way to kick start your day, let me try changing your opinion.  Grapefruits boost an impressive nutritional profile.   Let’s start with these facts about grapefruits . . .  they are rich in the nutritional powerhouse vitamin C, eating pink and red fleshed varieties gives you the benefits of the antioxidant lycopene, they are a rich source of the phytonutrient limonoids which promotes optimum health, they contain pectin which helps to lower cholesterol, they prevent kidney stones, they protect against colon cancer, they are concentrated with a flavonoid called Naringenin which is known to repair DNA and they help metabolize fat.  Yes, you heard that correctly.  Let me interpret . . . while you eat, they burn your fat.  Now, I have convinced you . . . totally!
 
So, will your fruit bowl be full with grapefruits?  Sooner than later, I am hoping!  Because ’tis the season to be eating maybe a few more goodies . . .  so balance that with a morning grapefruit!  You might just thank me for this reminder.  No worries, you are so very welcome!
